THE POWER OF 44:
In 2009, The Karmue family founded Christ Children’s Home (CCH), an orphanage in Liberia, to rescue and provide a safe haven to children abandoned, lost and orphaned during the Liberian Civil War. Today, this unique family of 44 children has been transformed into educated, vibrant, children of Liberia and CCH is ranked as one of the top two orphanage homes in the country.

CCH cultivates an environment where children are transformed and empowered through unconditional love, and are turned into powerful and unstoppable members of society!

CHRIST CHILDREN'S HOME

Sugar Hill
Prior to the civil war, SMK Co-Founder “Q” Karmue described the Gbarnga neighborhood as “paradise”. His childhood began in a home his parents built at the top of a hill, paved roads and wired electricity followed. The optimism and hopeful prospects of Q’s parents vision carried the whole neighborhood forward, encouraging residents to become actively engaged in innovation and progress.

After the war and his family’s return to Sugar Hill, this optimism has been revitalized. The original family home is now CCH Orphanage Home, housing students and staff. Here, a new generation of leaders are being cared for, mentored, and empowered. The children and young adults at CCH carry on Momma and Papa’s Karmue’s legacy, inspiring others to engage, collaborate, and create a prosperous future.

Our Mother and Father
Neyor and Fungbeh Karmue moved to Sugar Hill in the 1970s. At the time, Neyor was establishing a pharmaceutical business in Gbarnga to provide necessary medications to the city’s residents, and Fungbeh was managing an expansive rubber tree farm in the neighboring Garmu.

Today, Neyor and Fungbeh (referred to as Momma and Papa by all of their children) are the engine behind CCH, and are a source of radiating positive energy for anyone who knows them.

Every child living at CCH shares a similar journey: they were orphaned during a time of brutal violence and destruction during the Liberian civil war. These children experienced the very worst of humanity and society expected them to be forgotten, with no hope of rescue or healing.

SMK challenges those expectations at CCH by providing daily mentoring and support in a home environment full of love and positive energy. Our model of mentoring, providing resources, and empowerment enables the children grow up to become innovators and change makers in their communities. The potential of Liberia’s youth comes to life at CCH where our children, some now young adults, are setting an example of what is possible.
