LIBERIA: AMERICA’S LITTLE BROTHER
1847, the first republic in Africa founded by free slaves from America, modeled under the United States Constitution, imbuing the values of capitalism and free enterprise, and creating a Christian and English speaking nation.
Unfortunately, instead of transporting freedom, the Americo-Liberians installed a social political and economic system patterned after antebellum Dixie enslaving the indigenous population. This provided a perfect storm of poverty, corruption, and exploitation.
After 133 years of repression, the Liberian civil war destroyed the infrastructure of the country, killing 250,000 people, leaving hundreds of thousands of orphans in its wake.
